A Grain of Sand in Polarized Light
This is an ordinary grain of silica sand that measures less than a millimeter across. The colors result from birefringence in the quartz crystal as the sample is illuminated with partially polarized light. It was imaged with a Mitutoyo M Plan APO 10X microscope objective, and the video uses a focus-stacking technique to achieve a large depth of focus.

A Tiny World of Lichens

Lichens and bryophytes grow on practically every tree, but you've probably never seen them like this! Up close they look like a beautiful alien landscape. This video shows several lichen species and some surprisingly colorful tiny moss that I found growing together on the bark of a maple tree that fell in my backyard. An Alien Egg? At one point you'll see what looks like a round black alien egg...

    Hello. Is it taken as a photo and then animated into a video? Or was this originally filmed as a video?

    • @BrainRight
      @BrainRight 27 днів тому

      This was recorded as video, but at high magnification the depth of focus is very small so I used an image stacking technique to achieve a large depth of focus. Each frame of the finished video is a combination of hundreds of images taken at different focus positions. I developed my own software to process the many terabytes of raw video and combine the in-focus parts of each frame.

    • @medovoe-pomeste
      @medovoe-pomeste 27 днів тому

      @@BrainRight Thank you! Analyzing the video, I came to almost the same conclusion that photo sessions were taken, each of which consisted of several hundred frames, and then a video was stitched together from them.

      @@BrainRight What is the magnification in this video?

    • @BrainRight
      @BrainRight 27 днів тому

      @@medovoe-pomeste The optical magnification onto the camera's sensor ranges from about 1X up to 16X. With some slight cropping that gives a field of view that's about 16mm down to 1mm wide.

    Hi Jay! Thank you for the video! It was very useful, but as English is not my main language, there are some things that I wasn't able to understand properly. What kind of phenolic board did you use to hold the mother of pearl? Phenolic wood or some kind of phenolic plastic like bakelite?

    • @BrainRight
      @BrainRight Місяць тому

      Hi Ernesto, I'm glad you found the video useful. Here is a link to the phenolic sheets that I used. I think that wood or thin plywood would also work, but it would absorb acetone when soaking it to release the glue. Some people use white glue instead of cyanoacrylate, and soak it in water to release the parts. www.precisebits.com/products/substrates/backingmaterials.asp

    Love the experimentation with the different colors. How do you think the epoxy/wood combo will hold up over the years as the wood ages and goes through humidity changes?

    • @BrainRight
      @BrainRight 3 місяці тому

      Glad you enjoyed it. I don't think there will be any problem with the epoxy and humidity changes because it's reasonably thin (flexible) and it should be well-bonded to the wood because I left the pockets just as they came from the router, i.e. the insides of the pockets should have lots of small surface irregularities that will help the epoxy to adhere. It could be a problem in an environment with extreme humidity changes but I haven't had any reports of failures from the family members to whom I gave these boards.

      Thanks, it was beginner's luck perhaps. After this project I really struggled trying to get an aluminum TIG weld that didn't look like crap. I watched many videos, tried many techniques and my welds were just terrible. I finally figured out that my argon cylinder was running low and while it still gave adequate flow rate indicated on the flow gauge, apparently I was getting impure gas from the dregs of the tank. I switched to a new cylinder and immediately my welds looked so much better, still not professional but at least not totally incompetent and I was finally able to start working on my technique.

    Harmonic Drive's design on HPG, HPGP & HPF Series allows the internal gear to elastically deform, accommodating the operational stresses that might otherwise lead to increased backlash. This elastic deformation is specifically intended to maintain consistent backlash levels, compensating for the wear and tear that might typically lead to increased backlash in a traditional gear system. Your work is very beautiful. Visually, those pockets look a lot deeper than I would have expected. My assumption is that was just the depth of the material you were using. Thanks for sharing your techniques.

    • @BrainRight
      @BrainRight 4 місяці тому

      I try to make the pockets just a little shallower than the thickness of the material, to minimize how much shell material will be sanded off. It doesn't matter much with plain white shell like this, but when using highly figured material like abalone, I try to fit the patterns of the shell into the design. The patterns change as you sand them down so it's best to remove as little as possible.

    im a bit confused to how to connect the drivers to the controller. when looking at the connections on the controller, there is only two ports for +5v-s but you have xyz to connect. so one of the axis will be missing +5v-s to connect or do you daisy chain all the common to any of the +5 ports? Im used to working with bob's that have separate connections for each axis

    • @BrainRight
      @BrainRight 6 місяців тому

      The +5v outputs are just a common power supply for the opto-isolated inputs on the stepper drivers, so yes you just daisy-chain the +5 to the + side of step and dir on each driver. The step/dir output signals shunt current to GND when energized so they go to the individual - inputs on the drivers.
